I will start by stating that I have had this laptop for three years (An Acer Aspire 4339-2618) running windows 7 Home Premium (And LOVING IT). I have noticed that every once in a while when I was home in Chicago, that my laptop would occasionally just seem to shut off all wireless capabilities. (It would disconnect from our home router, and not show any other possible connections from nearby houses, like it normally does. The little 'Wi-fi signal' icon normally shows all 5 bars unlit, with an orange dot stating that connections are available. However when my laptop does this, it shows all 5 unlit bars with a red 'X' and saying no connections are available) I travel a lot between Chicago, Illinois and Normal, Illinois for college and visits back home. The aforementioned situation only occurred occasionally between 2011 and 2012.
Last year I noticed the situation happening a lot more frequently; especially here on campus, living in the dorms. The issue is REALLY starting to happen more frequently now. I moved into an apartment with 3 other roommates. For most of the summer I was using weak wifi signals to try and get. The girlfriend of one of my roommates let us use her internet from about mid-July until about last week (We finally got X-finity internet.) When using my roommate's girlfriend's internet, I would get frequent 'Limited access' connection drops.
Now that we have our own wifi, I'm getting that on rare occasion, but as I said, the main issue is that it seems as though the wireless function on my laptop just shuts itself off. In the dorm rooms when this would happen, I could hard-wire into the internet, and the wireless connections would reappear. This does not seem to be the case for my apartment's wifi. I've checked my laptop's specifications and it seems I'm working with an Atheros AR5B95 wireless adapter, and an Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20) Ethernet adapter/card. I have tried to look for Atheros drivers, but it almost doesn't even seem as though they exist. Windows troubleshooter doesn't help at all.
Is there anyone at all who might be able to give some kind of insight/help on this situation? Because if it is just an issue with drivers, I would like to solve it. Or if anyone feels it might be necessary to order a new ethernet/wireless adapter, how difficult would it be to replace the current one? I'm in dire need of help.
Midterms are coming, and while it is comforting to know that my ethernet port works fine, I don't want to spend my days in the living room of my apartment to use internet. Many thanks to any and all who offer some form of advice!
